چکیده

The cybernetic framework is a mathematical formalism developed by Ramkrishna and coworkers for modelling microbial systems. In this work, we analyze the dynamics of the cybernetic model for diauxic growth (Kompala et al., 1986, Biotechnol. Bioengng. 28 1044-1055). Recent data shows, however, that microbial growth on binary mixtures is frequently nondiauxic. The goal of this work is to: (1) Understand why the model captures the diauxie. (2) Determine if the model can embrace the nondiauxic growth patterns. The analysis shows that the global dynamics of the cybernetic model agree with diauxic behavior, and the autocatalytic nature of enzyme synthesis plays a key role in ensuring this agreement. But there exists no set of parameter values for which the model embraces the nondiauxic growth patterns; this observation is specific to the model of Kompala et al. (1986) and does not apply to the more recent cybernetic model of Ramakrishna et al. (1997, Biotechnol. Bioengng 52, 141 151). ~) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd

Abstract--Following Trinh and Ramkrishna (1996a, Chem. Engng Sci., in press), spatial patterns due to steady-state multiplicity in catalyst particles in a packed-bed catalytic reactor is investigated further under isothermal conditions. In this work, axial dispersion is included in the fluid phase while the assumption of lumped resistance to transport (within the particles) at the particle surf...

A new discretization method for solving population balance equations for simultaneous nucleation, growth and aggregation of particles is proposed. The method combines the best features of our discretization technique (Kumar and Ramkrishna, 1996, Chem. Engng. Sci. 51, 1311-1337), i.e., designing discrete equations to obtain desired properties of a size distribution directly, applicability to an ...

Parallel Tempering Algorithm for Conformational Studies of Biological Molecules

The effectiveness of a new algorithm, parallel tempering, is studied for numerical simulations of biological molecules. These molecules suffer from a rough energy landscape. The resulting slowing down in numerical simulations is overcome by the new method. This is demonstrated by performing simulations with high statistics for one of the simplest peptides, Met-enkephalin. The numerical effectiv...

Learning with computers: experiences of evaluation

ÐAt the Open University (OU), the perception of computer assisted learning (CAL) is shifting from its current position as an optional extra in a battery of course components to that of a key teaching medium. This paper presents the authors' experiences of the evaluation of a range of current OU produced computer assisted learning materials, mainly but not exclusively in science and technology r...

Parallel Transient Time of One-Dimensional Sand Pile

Sand dripping in 1 dimensional Sand Pile Model is rst studied. Patterns and signals appear. Their behaviors and interactions are explained and asymptotic approximations are made. The total collapsing time of a single stack of sand is linear in function of the number of grains.
